High performance high pressure air reservoirs

About

Compressed air energy storage is a promising way to store energy for long durations and eliminate the need for gas peaking plants. There are two major issues to solve: improving the round trip efficiency of such systems (see other project collaborations by Shifted) and designing competitive and scalable solutions to store air at high pressure. This latter one is critical as it defines the price of the systems (CAPEX) per kWh for long durations. It is generally agreed that a wide scale adoption of long duration energy storage, the CAPEX must be less than 50 €/kWh.

This project aims at designing proper reservoirs to store air at a minimum of 100 bars, (potentially up to 300 bars), in large volume (minimum 1 MWh and up to 1 GWh), at a cost below 50 €/kWh aiming for 10 €/kWh, with a lifetime of 30 years+, in a modular and scalable way. We are happy to share our ideas with you on how to meet such objectives. This includes design and calculation activities, economic studies, material studies, test in laboratories and first of kind mnaufacturing and tests.
