About
VSL is the national metrology institute of the Netherlands. My research area is monitoring and metering of CO2 related to CM2026-04. VSL is keen to contribute to the project, particularly in the following areas:
-
Monitoring and management technologies for emissions from CO₂ capture systems;
-
Infrastructure for CO₂ transport and storage (pipelines, ships, intermodal solutions, temporary storage, monitoring and metering in CO₂ networks, well integrity and well technologies);
-
Development of commercial CO₂ storage sites, including screening, characterisation, safe management and cost-effective monitoring;
-
Investigating undesirable reactions leading to acid formation and corrosion of pipeline and storage materials in under CCS relevant conditions;
-
Sampling and analysis of impurities in CO2 at threshold levels;
-
Investigating material compatibility for sampling impurities in CO₂;
-
Preparing gas mixtures for testing and validating equipment and analytical methods;
-
We have and develop analytical methods to detect impurities at threshold levels in CO₂;
-
Determination of influence on metering and monitoring on varying CO2 compositions.
This research contributes to:
-
Deployment of large-scale CO₂ transport and storage infrastructure enabling tens of millions of tonnes per year by the mid-2030s
-
Supporting standardisation efforts by enhancing the understanding of the physical and chemical behaviour of impure CO₂
-
Providing recommendations for the design and operation of monitoring technologies to prevent adverse effects on the integrity of transport infrastructure and storage complexes caused by impurities
-
Assessing the impact of impurities on various equipment
-
Defining specifications for transport and storage infrastructure
