About

SargaSTREAM is an international, community-centered, and transdisciplinary research initiative tackling one of the fastest-growing environmental challenges in the Tropical Atlantic: the massive influxes of pelagic Sargassum seaweed. These floating mats, once largely confined to the Sargasso Sea, now wash ashore in record quantities, affecting coastal ecosystems, local economies, and public health. Bringing together scientists, educators, local leaders, and policymakers from across the Caribbean, South America, North America, and Asia, SargaSTREAM combines cutting-edge research with practical, community-led solutions. The project focuses on four key areas: Monitoring & Prediction – Using satellite imagery, drones, and local reporting to track sargassum movements and forecast landings. Air Quality & Health – Studying and mitigating the release of gases from decomposing sargassum to protect community health. Biodesign & Education – Equipping educators and local leaders with innovative, hands-on tools to teach about sargassum, sustainability, and climate change. Blue Economy Viability – Researching and testing sustainable uses for sargassum to create local economic opportunities while protecting marine environments. By merging rigorous science with local knowledge and creativity, SargaSTREAM empowers coastal communities to transform a pressing environmental threat into a catalyst for sustainability, resilience, and innovation
