ST LAWRENCE RIVER INSTITUTE OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES
About
The St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences (River Institute) was established in 1994 as a not-for-profit, charitable organization with a mandate for environmental research, education, and community engagement.
Research projects focus on river biodiversity, water quality, species at risk, and the impacts of contaminants, dams, invasive species, and climate change. Areas of expertise include aquatic and wetland ecology, eco-toxicology, environmental DNA, remote sensing and GIS, ecosystem indicators and ecosystem modelling. Data and findings inform government policy, advance scientific knowledge, and support sustainable innovation.
The River Institute also possess a unique ability to integrate in-house scientific research with education and community outreach. Every year, the organization introduces four to five thousand students to environmental science through interactive programs that offer opportunities to experience scientific discovery alongside research scientists. Outreach activities provide access to environmental health information, engage local knowledge and input, and inspire members of the community to explore and care for freshwater ecosystems.
River Institute research, education, and outreach programs are strengthened by long-term partnerships and collaborations with First Nations—particularly the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, one of the River Institute’ founding partners—as well as universities, government agencies, environmental organizations, community groups, and industry.
