Department of Algology focuses on cyanobacteria and algae thriving under extreme conditions in cold and hot deserts, with particular emphasis on biological soil crusts—complex communities in which cyanobacteria and algae are key components. These crusts are fundamental to arid and semi-arid ecosystems: they retain moisture, support germination of native plants, suppress invasions by non-native species, and stabilise soils against erosion. In the context of accelerating climate change and landscape desiccation, our research delivers knowledge with clear relevance for drought mitigation and soil quality improvement.
