Matís is a governmentally owned non-profit food & biotech R&D company. At Matís, we work on research and innovation projects and provide analytical services. The work is carried out in collaboration with local and international food producers,  universities, biotechnology companies and service providers.

Impacts of Matis activities include: 

• Changes in products and processes in traditional fish, aquaculture, and agricultural industry have improved quality and value. 

• We are preparing and promoting changes in food systems to meet global environmental challenges with better utilization of side streams in food processing, utilization of biomass like seaweed and microalgae and other novel protein sources. 

• Our databases of microbes, nutrients, and contaminants support food safety, public health, food product development and education activities. 

• Increased competence building through collaboration between academia, Matís and the industry on research, training (PhD, MSc) through local and international projects.  

• Ensuring safety of food products through prioritized services to track origin of food poisoning outbreaks.

Analytical services 

 Matís laboratories offer accredited microbiological and chemical analyses of food, water, raw materials, pharmaceuticals, feed and environmental samples. To ensure safety and health, analyses are needed to verify the safety of the production processes and nutrient composition of products. Matís’ analytical services are in Reykjavík and Neskaupstaður. 

 Matís also provides consultation to authorities, the food industry, biotechnology and other private companies.
