About

The Veterinary Research Institute of Thessaloniki, established in 1997, is a scientific research unit of the Hellenic Agricultural Organization – DIMITRA (former NAGREF). The Institute is dedicated to cutting-edge research and innovation in veterinary science, animal production, and public health, contributing to national and European scientific and policy frameworks.

The mission of the Institute is to conduct research and provide scientific expertise aimed at:

  • Improving livestock productivity, sustainability, and farm management

  • Supporting sustainable development and genetic characterization of local animal breeds

  • Protecting public health through integrated One Health approaches

  • Preventing, diagnosing, and controlling infectious and emerging diseases in farm animals

  • Advancing reproductive performance using classical and modern biotechnological methods

  • Ensuring hygiene, technology, and safety of food products of animal origin

  • Developing sustainable livestock production systems that support animal welfare, environmental protection, and production of high-quality food

  • Applying toxicological assessments related to animals, feed, and environmental hazards

  • Providing expertise in Quantitative Microbiological Risk Assessment and food chain safety

Beyond research activities, the Institute plays a key national role by:

  • Providing scientific and technical support to the Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food

  • Participating in international scientific networks, fora, and working groups

  • Acting as National Contact Points in European Scientific Committees

  • Supporting national committees and advisory bodies (Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Development, National Drug Organization, etc.)

  • Delivering applied services to farmers, veterinary practitioners, and agricultural organizations

  • Organizing and contributing to training programs and seminars for students, scientists, and veterinarians

With strong national infrastructure, accredited laboratories, and extensive collaboration with universities, research institutes, and stakeholders across Europe, the Veterinary Research Institute serves as a center of excellence in veterinary science, public health, and sustainable livestock development.
