Operational CSIC greenhouse with RFID insect tracking (>100 mg): ready infrastructure to monitor behaviour, test drivers of decline and validate methods

About

LOPSI (CSIC) offers a unique, already operational experimental infrastructure to support projects addressing insect decline and biodiversity monitoring. We provide access to a controlled greenhouse facility in Murcia (managed by CEBAS-CSIC), equipped with an RFID-based localisation system for tracking individual insects (>100 mg) using ultra-light tags (~30 mg).

This infrastructure enables high-resolution spatiotemporal monitoring of insect movement, behaviour, and habitat use under controlled yet realistic environmental conditions. It is particularly suitable for studying drivers of insect decline, testing mitigation strategies, and validating monitoring methodologies before deployment in open-field conditions.

LOPSI can contribute with technological know-how in localisation systems, experimental design, data acquisition, and integration of tracking data with ecological analyses. The facility is operational and can be demonstrated to potential consortia. We are interested in joining consortia where this infrastructure can add value as a testbed, validation site, or complementary experimental platform.
