Nature-based bioremediation of polluted waters using microbial biofilms and macroalgae (Cluster 6 Zero Pollution)

We offer nature-based, biotechnology-enabled solutions to decontaminate and bioremediate aquatic and soil environments by working with microbial communities, microbial biofilms and macroalgae. The approach is embedded in an integrated catchment perspective, acknowledging strong soil–water linkages (e.g., erosion-driven particle transport worsening water quality and accelerating eutrophication), and therefore targets solutions that are locally adaptable across the whole impacted area. We combine field deployment and laboratory validation, including: year-round in situ monitoring of biofilm/macroalgae metabolic activity, targeted cultivation and inoculation, and testing accumulation of heavy metals and other harmful substances using macroalgae.

This opportunity directly supports Cluster 6 Destination "Clean environment and zero pollution", and is particularly relevant for HORIZON-CL6-2026-01-ZEROPOLLUTION-01-two-stage (Decontaminate and bioremediate aquatic pollution), which calls for locally adaptable, site-specific bioremediation solutions and integrated monitoring approaches.

We are looking to meet partners bringing: demonstrator sites (utilities, river basin authorities, municipalities), technology providers (monitoring, treatment, deployment), SMEs/start-ups, competent authorities, and end-user stakeholders to maximise uptake and impact.
