CO₂ Capture and Valorisation through Fermentation Technologies

Senior lead R&T Researcher at Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology

Hautcharage, Luxembourg

About

Full description: LIST’s patented dense membrane gas capture technology fixes CO₂ into energy via biomethanation and biochemicals, including chain elongation for medium-chain acid production. Unlike traditional porous membranes, it leverages molecular diffusion through non-porous membranes, eliminating fouling and enabling direct raw biogas injection without pre-mixing or continuous slurry recirculation. Low-cost silicone membranes enhance economic viability, supporting efficient, resilient gas separation and biogas upgrading, achieving methane purities up to 95% at mesophilic conditions (37°C).

Our infrastructure includes four anaerobic digestion reactors each paired with a biological methanation reactor, allowing decoupled CO₂ and H₂ fluxes and precise control over reaction conditions. A mobile pilot-scale demonstrator with two 800-liter reactors, fully integrated in an ATEX-compliant container, enables field deployment, real-time process monitoring, and flexible testing of gas capture technologies at TRL 5–7. Its modular, versatile design supports on-site demonstrations, industrial trials, and technology validation under real-world conditions.
