Nanotechnology: Developing novel technologies in sustainable agriculture and biotechnology

Professor at U of Crete, Department of Chemistry, Laboratory of Analytical Chemistry

Heraklion, Greece

About

Nanotechnology is a promising technology which upon integration into modern precision agriculture can aid in optimizing resources, enhance crop yields, diagnostics, micronutrient supply, insect pest control etc.  Nanotechnology can allow for controlled distribution of nutrients and/or insecticides, decreasing waste and environmental harm.  In addition, nano biosensors can provide real-time monitoring of soil condition and nutrient levels.

Basic research is needed in order to address questions as to the advantages possibilities and applications of the novel properties of nanoscale materials. Such technological advancements could contribute to controlling plant and crop protection, plant fertilization, and food stability.

We aim at evaluating non-toxic organic based nanoparticles as carriers onto which different species can be grafted to meliorate their dispersion, permeability, stability and biodegradability immobilization, transportation, protection and detection.
