The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) is an academic Institution which is composed of 11 faculties consisting of 41 Schools and involves a critical mass of Faculty approximately equal to 40000 active students (31000 undergraduate and 9,000 postgraduate of which 3952 at doctorate level) and 3252 faculty members & research stuff. There are 1.682 faculty members. There are also 311 members of the Special Laboratory Teaching Personnel (S.L.T.P.). Faculty members are also assisted by 144 members of the Special Technical Laboratory Personnel (S.T.L.P.). The administration office consists of 278 permanent employees and 256 employees under a private law contract of indefinite duration. AUTh is the largest University in Greece and in the Balkans, covering all disciplines. The University has been actively participating in the Erasmus Programme since 1987, accounting approximately one fourth of the total Erasmus mobility in Greece in the frame of Student for Studies Mobilities as well as Staff for Teaching Mobilities. The Department of International Relations and the Department of European Educational Programmes are responsible for enhancing, organizing and maintaining good relations between the Aristotle University and the international academic community, as well as for promoting the university abroad, with the aim to reinforce cooperation and communication in the field of teaching and research. The research and excellence goals are met by participating in International Organizations, Unions and University Networks, coordinating and implementing Bilateral Agreements between the AUTh and universities all over the world, as well as by implementing the European Policy of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki through the Erasmus+ programme and various other European Educational Programmes (Erasmus Mundus, Erasmus+ International etc.). The UNESCO Chair on Education for Human Rights, Democracy and Peace, the UNESCO Chair and International Network of Water-Environment Centers for the Balkans, the UNESCO C2c Center for Integrated Water Resources Management and the “Iason” Programme play an integral role in continually advancing the prestige of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. In terms of promoting innovation, 32 patents have been granted during the last 3 years on a national, European and international level. According to the most recent ARWU international ranking, AUTH is among the top 501 universities out of 1.200, ranking as the 2nd university in Greece. AUTh is also among the first 300 universities (#262) over 31000 universities worldwide and 2nd in Greece in the 2024 ranking by WEBOMETRICS. AUTh has a funding (2019-2023) (nationally and internationally) of a total of 354 million of euros and 91,7 M € Annual Turnover for 2023. It is also worth mentioning that AUTh has 1224 international partners, 7590 external researchers and 5737 active research programs (year 2023) and showing an enhancement the last years not only to funding but also in international cooperation. AUTh has implemented and implements a large number of research projects funded by: i) The General Budget of the European Union: FP7, Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe, ERASMUS+, etc., ii) ESF & ERDF + National Funds: NSRF 2007, -2013, PA 2014 - 2020, PA 2021 - 2027, Recovery & Resilience Facility (NextGenerationEU) 2021 - 2025, etc., iii) Private Funds. Under H2020, AUTH participated in 254 projects until the end of 2024 a with a total (received & anticipated) EU contribution € 89.132.406,71, of which AUTH has assumed the Co-ordinating role in 56 projects. Under the HE, AUTH participated in 196 HE projects until the end of 2030 with a total (received & anticipated) EU contribution €89.812.740,53, of which AUTH has assumed the Co-ordinating role in 47 projects. In its activity, the AUTh employs and collaborates with distinguished researchers.
