KIST Europe (Korea Institute of Science and Technology Europe) is the European research center of KIST, Korea’s leading government-funded multidisciplinary research institute. Established in Saarbruecken, Germany, KIST Europe serves as a scientific bridge between Korea and Europe, facilitating joint research and innovation in alignment with EU priorities. The institute is structured into three thematic research clusters: Energy & Environment, Advanced Bio, and AI Convergence. We are part of the Energy & Environment Cluster, focusing on fuel cells, batteries, other energy-related research, environmental safety, circular economy, pollutant monitoring, sensing technology, and sustainable chemical and water resource management. The core expertise in our team for environmental works includes advanced mass spectrometry, non-targeted analysis, sensor development, life cycle assessment (LCA), and AI-assisted environmental diagnostics. We actively conduct research on emerging pollutants such as PFAS and microplastics and work on adsorption-based recovery and water reuse technologies. As an EU-based legal entity and an official arm of KIST, we are uniquely positioned to participate in Horizon Europe as a beneficiary, while also bringing in Korean public research institutions, such as KIST’s Water Resources and Recycling Center and other national R&D partners, into international consortia. Through cross-continental collaboration, KIST Europe aims to advance sustainable solutions to global environmental and technological challenges.

About me

I am a project leader for KIST Europe, the EU branch of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), based in Germany. My research team specializes in environmental pollutant monitoring, circular economy, and chemical risk assessment. We bring strong expertise in analytical chemistry, life cycle assessment (LCA), and AI-assisted data analytics, particularly in emerging contaminants (e.g., PFAS) and advanced sensing technologies.

In addition to our own research, we are also actively coordinating with Korean partners for Horizon Europe participation. Notably, KIST’s Water Resources and Recycling Research Center (Seoul, Korea) conducts advanced research on wastewater treatment, precious metal and resource recovery from effluents, and AI-integrated process optimization.

We are also in contact with the other Korean government-funded research institutes, including the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT), which leads national research on water purification and resource recovery technologies, as well as several top universities with expertise in contaminant removal and environmental system design (including PFAS remediation).

Our aim is to form strong transnational collaborations for proposals under Cluster 6, especially those related to water reuse, resource recovery, pollutant detection, and sustainable circular economy.
