My organisation

The Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH) was founded in 1983. It is the largest research center in Greece with well-organized facilities, highly qualified personnel and a reputation as a top-level research institution worldwide. FORTH reports to the General Secretariat for Research and Innovation of the Ministry of Development. FORTH conducts specialized scientific research in strategic high-added value sectors, focusing on interdisciplinary research and development (R&D) activities in areas of major scientific, societal and economic interest, such as: Lasers and Photonics, Microelectronics, Advanced Materials / Nanotechnology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Biotechnology, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Precision Medicine, Systems Biology, Robotics, Telecommunications, Applied and Computational Mathematics, Chemical Engineering Sciences, Energy, Environment, Social Sciences & Humanities, Astrophysics and Astronomy. FORTH comprises ten Research Institutes. Its headquarters and central administration are based in Heraklion, Crete.

About me

Stavros Pissadakis is Director of Research at the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH), Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL), and founder of the Photonic Materials and Devices Laboratory. He obtained his Ptychion degree from the Physics Department of University of Crete, Greece, his Ph.D. degree from Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC), University of Southampton, UK, and a Specialisation in Business Strategy from the Harvard Business School, USA. He has been employed in several academic positions in Greece and UK; while, he was visiting professor at the University of Parma, Italy. He has coordinated and participated in several European and National research and industrial projects; also, he is a member of the Board of Stakeholders of the European Technological Platform Photonics21. His current scientific interests include development of optical fiber sensors for diverse application fields, optofluidics, photonic resonators, and photosensitivity of optical materials. Dr Pissadakis is an author/co-author of 84 publications in refereed journals and of 155 publications in international conferences, including 50 invited contributions. He is Topical Editor of Applied Optics, Associate Editor of IEEE/Optica Journal of Lightwave Technology, and Senior Member of both IEEE and OSA. Dr Pissadakis is also a registered farmer, professionally cultivating more than 2100 olive and avocado trees, while managing two large scale farms.
