Fungi and Plant-Derived Bioactives for Emergency and Therapeutic Nutrition.
About
We propose the development and application of multifunctional bioactive fungal and plant extracts derived both from natural ecosystems and organic farming systems. These compounds have the potential to support the immunity, resilience, and overall well-being of both humans and animals, especially in the context of growing challenges such as antimicrobial resistance and environmental stressors. Our initiative builds on the Fungi Extract Bank® (https://fungiextractbank.com/en/)) and the natureTECH, Multidirectional screening strategies aimed at identifying novel compounds with antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, adaptogenic, and gut health-promoting effects.
The focus is on discovering and valorizing bioactive substances that act via multiple mechanisms, making them robust candidates for future bio-based, organic-origin supplements, and therapeutics. These compounds are suitable for formulation into Ready-to-Use Supplementary and Therapeutic Foods (RUSF/RUTF), advanced functional foods, and natural health products that meet the nutritional and immune needs of vulnerable populations—both in emergency settings and in preventive healthcare contexts.
This approach contributes to sustainable food and health systems, linking biodiversity, circular bioeconomy principles, and One Health objectives. By integrating scientific excellence, ecological sourcing, and scalable innovation, the project aims to provide nature-based, future-proof solutions for food and nutrition security, animal welfare, and mental and metabolic health.
