SGESS-ReUse-Twin
research at Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation IFF
Magdeburg, Germany
About
Fraunhofer IFF in Magdeburg is looking for European consortium partners for the CETPartnership Joint Call 2026.
With SGESS-ReUse-Twin, we offer a concrete research idea, a real existing demonstrator and complementary research infrastructure for the assessment and future design of reuse-friendly stationary battery energy storage systems.
The starting point is the SGESS large-scale battery storage system at Fraunhofer IFF. The system is currently out of operation. The power electronics are defective and a significant part of the battery system is strongly degraded. This makes SGESS a valuable real-world case for analysing an existing battery storage asset under realistic end-of-life and defect conditions.
The proposed research idea focuses on:
-
condition and defect assessment of existing stationary battery systems,
-
evaluation of realistic reuse, repowering, second-life, remanufacturing and recycling pathways,
-
development of digital methods, data models and reuse-readiness indicators,
-
concepts for design-for-reuse, documentation and information preservation,
-
transfer of findings into future planning, construction and operation of reuse-friendly battery energy storage systems.
Fraunhofer IFF can contribute:
-
access to a real battery storage demonstrator with known defects,
-
historical operation, maintenance and system data,
-
laboratory and testing infrastructure,
-
expertise in energy system operation, digital twins, monitoring and assessment methods,
-
method development for reuse-oriented system analysis and future battery-system design.
We see the strongest fit with CM2026-06 – Stationary battery technologies and systems for climate-neutral industry and built environment. Depending on the consortium focus, the idea may also contribute to CM2026-09 – Integrated industrial energy systems, CM2026-08 – Integrated regional energy systems or CM2026-10 – Clean energy integration in the built environment.
Fraunhofer IFF is open to joining different CETP-relevant consortia as a committed research and infrastructure partner. We are particularly interested in cooperation with partners from battery diagnostics, BMS, ageing analysis, AI/data analytics, digital twins, repowering, second-life use, recycling, LCA, standardisation, industrial sites, building energy systems, microgrids and energy communities.
We are open to dirfrent national and international calls and shaping the final proposal focus together with committed European partners.
