Circular Integration of Biochar in Low-Carbon Cement through Waste-to-Value Innovation
About
Challenge
Cement production is responsible for ~8% of global CO₂ emissions, largely due to process-related calcination. While decarbonisation efforts focus on fuel-switching and clinker reduction, circular carbon solutions that store carbon within cement materials remain untapped. Simultaneously, significant quantities of agricultural and industrial organic waste are underutilised in Mediterranean and neighbouring regions.
The project aims to demonstrate the technical, environmental, and market viability of integrating biochar produced from regionally available waste biomass into cementitious materials, enabling a circular, carbon-negative solution for the construction industry.
Key Activities
-
Screening of optimal biomass types for high-quality, durable biochar compatible with cement
-
Design and testing of biochar-cement formulations at lab and pilot scale
-
Development of MRV methodologies aligned with certification schemes
-
Socioeconomic and environmental impact assessment in Mediterranean and industrial regions
-
Business modeling and scale-up pathways for circular construction materials
Expected Outcomes
-
Validated recipes for biochar-cement blends meeting performance and carbon durability standards
-
Increased valorization of agricultural and forestry residues in high-emission sectors
-
Roadmap for integrating certified carbon-negative materials into regional construction markets
