Graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 1984 by the University of Extremadura and Specialist in Clinical Pharmacology (2001), Doctor in Medicine in 1988. Postdoctoral Training (Ministry of Education and Science) in the Department of Clinical Pharmacology at the Karolinska Institute of Stockholm in Sweden (1989-1993), Assistant Professor of the Department of Pharmacology and Psychiatry at the University of Extremadura (1993), Full Professor in 1997 and Professor linked to the Extremadura Health Service (2017). Teaching mainly to students of Medicine, of the Doctorate of Pharmacology and Psychiatry and of the Master of Biomedical Knowledge Management and Clinical Research (2006-2013) Coordinator.
From 1995 to 2003 he is involved in activities at the University of Debrecen in Hungary, where he directs a PhD, with annual stays at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm and the University of Tartu in Estonia. Since 2001-13, he has been a Full Professor at the Universidade da Beira Interior in the Facultad da Ciencias da Sàude in Portugal, in an integrated target-based experimental program. He has been Visiting Professor at the University of California (UCLA) in Los Angeles during 2004/05, also at the Mount Sinai Hospital and Medical School of New York in USA in 2005 and Miller School of Medicine in Miami in 2006, the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad Mayor de San Marcos in Lima (Peru), in 2007 Pontificia Universidad Javeriana de Bogotá (Colombia), in Australian National University John Curtin Postgraduate Medical School (2010, Instituto Politécnico Nacional de México- Unidad Durango (2008), PhD at the University of Coimbra.
He has published more than 240 scientific papers (indexed in PubMed) and directed more than 25 PhD students and more than 600 interventions in scientific congresses, mainly international. He has been coordinator of research projects of the European Union and in more than 30 projects as principal investigator. His research activity has been positively evaluated in 6 periods of 6 years. He is Editor in Chief or Member of the Editorial Board of Scientific Journals indexed in Pharmacogenetics and Clinical Pharmacology.
Since January 2006, he directs the CICAB, Clinical Research Center of the Health Area of Badajoz of the Extremadura Health Service, at the University Hospital of Badajoz. He coordinates the Iberoamerican Society of Pharmacogenetics and Pharmacogenomics (RIBEF) since 2006. International consultant: European Union (EU-IPTS), WHO and PAHO. He was Vice-President of the Spanish Society of Clinical Pharmacology (SECF) (2013-15), and since 2010 he is a member of the EMA Pharmacogenomics Working Parthy. He is currently President of the Spanish Society of Pharmacogenetics and Pharmacogenomics (SEFF) and Board of the ESPT European Society of Pharmacogenomics and Theranostics. Director of the INUBE University Institute of Biosanitary Research of Extremadura since its foundation in 2017. Directs in Extremadura one of the pioneering initiatives in implementation of Personalized Medicine, MedeA Project, recognized by ICPerMed as "Example of Good Practice" (https://www.icpermed.eu/en/medea-859.php).
Currently he coordinates the Spanish National Strategy on Pharmacogenetics of IMPaCT_Genomics, member of the Panel of Experts convened by the Senate for the preparation of the Report on Genomic Medicine, from the Presidency of the SEFF he promoted the National Strategy in which Guidelines for the use of Pharmacogenetics in Clinical Practice are being developed, participates in the International Consortium CPIC.
