About

Mexico possesses substantial solar energy potential, with 85% of its territory considered optimal for solar projects. The country is among the top five globally for solar energy resources, receiving high levels of solar radiation. This makes Mexico well-positioned to significantly expand its solar power generation capacity and contribute to a global energy transition towards renewables.

  • Abundant Solar Resources:

Mexico's geographical location and climate provide ample solar radiation, making it a prime location for solar energy development.

  • Technical Potential:

The National Renewable Energy Labs (NREL) estimates Mexico's technical potential for solar photovoltaics (PV) at 24,918 GW.

  • Large-Scale and Distributed Generation:

Mexico has the potential to develop both large-scale solar farms and distributed solar generation, including rooftop solar, to meet its energy needs.

  • Meeting Renewable Energy Targets:

Mexico has set ambitious renewable energy targets, including increasing solar capacity, which can be significantly supported by its solar resources.

  • Industrial Sector Potential:

Solar thermal technologies have the potential to play a significant role in decarbonizing Mexico's industrial sector.

  • Cost-Effectiveness:

Solar energy is becoming increasingly cost-competitive, with solar PV having a low levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) compared to other sources.

  • Government Support:

The Mexican government has shown support for renewable energy through policies, incentives, and participation in international commitments.

  • Community Engagement:

There is a growing focus on community involvement and stakeholder engagement in renewable energy projects, including solar, to ensure local benefits and support for the energy transition.
