In October 1869 the Institute for Agronomic Education Cluj-Mănăştur was founded. The study period covered three years and upon completion, the graduates were awarded an „agronomist graduate” diploma. Currently, the university continues the tradition of the institute (1869-1906), as well as of the subsequent institutions, respectively the Agriculture Academy Cluj (1906-1929), the Academy of High Agronomic Studies (1929-1948) and the Agronomy Institute (1948-1992), being the rightful heir of their patrimony. The university evolved continuously over the years, diversifying the profiles and the specializations, against the modernization of higher agronomic education.
At first, the Institute comprised only the Faculty of Agriculture. In 1935, an Animal Science department was created within the Faculty of Agriculture and later, in 1968, it became the Faculty of Animal Science. In 1992, new bioltechnology studies were developed, so that the faculty became the Faculty of Animal Science and Biotechnologies. The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine was founded in 1962 and the Faculty of Horticulture in 1977. Following the Senate decision in 17th of January 1990, the structure of the Agronomic Institute comprised four faculties: Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Science and Biotechnologies and Veterinary Medicine. This structure was approved by the Ministry of Education by the decree M.I. no. 7751 of 27 April 1990. On 26th of January 2012, the University Senate approved the founding of the fifth faculty, the Faculty of Food Science and Technology. This decision was validated by the Government Decision no. 707 of 18th July 2012. Therefore, all five faculties currently function within UASMV Cluj-Napoca. On 15th of April 2022, the University Senate approved the founding of the sixth faculty, the Faculty of Forestry and Land Measurement. This decision was validated by the Government Decision no. 433/03.08.2022. Therefore, all six faculties currently function within UASMV Cluj-Napoca.
Based on the university autonomy, the Senate decided that beginning with the academic year 1990/1991, “The Agronomic Institute” would be renamed “THE UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES”, decision acknowledged by OMI no. 4894 of 22 March 1991. Since 1992 the institution has functioned under the name “The University of Agricultural Sciences Cluj-Napoca”, according to HG 812 published in Monitorul Oficial 337 of 29 December 1992, while on 28 July 1995, according to OMI 4620/1995, the institution received its current name “The University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine Cluj-Napoca”, according to HG 586/28.07.1995.
