The New ATMP Manufacturing Reality: From Capacity to Capability
ATMP manufacturing is entering a new phase. The challenge is no longer simply to build more capacity, but to ensure that manufacturing infrastructures are flexible, efficient, competitive and aligned with the real needs of developers and patients. This panel will examine the evolving role of CDMOs and manufacturing platforms in cell and gene therapy, drawing on recent experience from Belgium and other international ecosystems. The discussion will explore current market pressures, utilisation of existing capacity, customer expectations, operational challenges and the conditions required to attract and retain ATMP programmes. Particular attention will be given to how existing infrastructures can be better used, upgraded or repurposed, rather than continuously adding new capacity. The panel will also address the contribution of automation, digitalisation, AI and smarter logistics in improving productivity, robustness and scalability. The objective is to move the conversation from capacity to capability: understanding which manufacturing capabilities Belgium truly needs, how existing assets can be strengthened, and how the ecosystem can remain competitive in a rapidly changing ATMP manufacturing landscape.
