The Mission:Ocean to Restore our Oceans and Waters by 2030 aims to achieve Good Environmental Status in European lakes, rivers and seas to levels prior to the Industrial Revolution. This means:

  1. protecting and restoring ecosystems and biodiversity

  2. eliminating pollution such as agricultural run-off, sewage, chemicals, oil spills or microplastics and

  3. making the blue economy sustainable, carbon neutral and circular

But how do we know when we have achieved these goals? What indicators do we use to measure and compare regenerative performance? Does low trophic aquaculture reduce or increase regenerative capacity? And what can low-trophic aquaculture contribute to these goals not just in ecological, but also economic and social terms?
