About me
Dr. Mulualem Tadesse is an Associate Professor of Clinical Microbiology at the School of Medical Laboratory Sciences and a Postdoctoral Researcher specializing in tuberculosis (TB) at the Mycobacteriology Research Center, Jimma University, Ethiopia. He earned his PhD in Biomedical Science with a focus on TB from the University of Antwerp, Belgium, in 2018. He subsequently completed a WHO/TDR Clinical Research and Development Fellowship at the Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND) in Geneva, where he contributed to the evaluation of culture-free, end-to-end targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS) solutions for diagnosing drug-resistant TB.
With more than a decade of research experience, Dr. Mulualem’s work centers on advancing TB diagnostics, investigating drug resistance mechanisms, and applying whole-genome sequencing. His research portfolio also includes studies on infectious diseases particularly antimicrobial resistance (AMR), supported by funding from WHO/TDR, GSK, Jimma University, and other bodies. He has supervised over 12 MSc and 5 PhD students and has authored or co-authored more than 30 peer-reviewed publications. His work has been recognized at national and international scientific forums, earning him three prizes in TB and AMR research.
