About me

Derrick Semugenze is a PhD student in Medical Microbiology and is registered at University of Amsterdam but currently residing in Kampala, Uganda.

Derrick`s research is focusing on association of human cytomegalovirus and other viruses with tuberculosis disease susceptibility and progression. This project is looking at children, TB presumptive adults, and TB exposed individuals from Uganda, Mozambique and South Africa. He is supervised by Prof. Frank Cobelens, Prof. Moses Joloba, Dr. Alberto García-Basteiro and Dr. Willy Ssengooba.

Derrick has a Masters of degree in Immunology and Clinical Microbiology from Makerere University and his MSc thesis was titled “Development and optimization of an in vitro method to force and select for functional HIV-1 intersubtype pol recombinants”. Derrick has over 10 years’ experience in TB disease research.
